So what's happening?
Often you can take a wheel and balance it ten different times, only to get many different results.

Sometimes it may call for a different amount of weight - known as weight repeatability. And other times it may call for the weight in a different position - known as angle repeatability. These are facts regardless of the brand of the balancer.

Before you call your service representative to have yet another calibration done on your balancer - and receive yet another service bill - let us first take a look at how a balancer really works.

All balancers manufactured in the late '70s, '80s and '90s use basically the same technology. Sure, faster and better micro chips have made it possible to make the circuit boards smaller, cheaper and more solid state - all resulting in cheaper balancers that spin at lower speeds and break down less frequently. Yet balancers are really no more accurate than they were many years ago.
Compare a balancer manufactured 20 years ago with one produced yesterday, and you will find that both balancers are accurate to 1 gram and 1 degree. Yes, it is true that a few balancers claim 1/3 of a degree accuracy, as if any tire technician could possibly place the weight on the wheel to 1/3 degree accuracy.

The fact of the matter is that when you buy a new wheel balancer, you get fantastic new features, better longevity, fewer breakdowns and a beautiful new paint job - what you don't get is higher accuracy!

Which brings us back to the original question. If balancers, new or old, are so accurate, then why does a balancer call for different amounts of weight at a different position almost every time the same wheel is balanced? Two words - Centering & Torque

It's really that simple. Balancers are extremely accurate - but they are also extremely stupid. A balancer simply assumes that if you are going to bother to balance a wheel, then certainly you have first centered the wheel absolutely perfectly on the balancer's shaft.
To get a smooth vibration free drive, the wheel must be centered & torqued onto the balancer, just the same way it will be centered & torqued onto the vehicle! That's it - It's truly that simple! But that is only possible when using Flange Plate Adaptors!

Flange Plate adaptors are manufactured to extremely high tolerances, so there is very little play between the shaft, the adaptor and the studs that hold the wheel. The Flange Plate thus helps to eliminate the effect of gravity and at the same time torque the wheel onto the balancer. When the effects of gravity is reduced the result is near perfect Static balance results.

The Flange Plate is designed in such a way that when the Wingnut is tightened down, each stud on the Flange Plate will receive the identical torque. This ensures that the wheel is sitting absolutely vertical on the balancer with equal pressure in each lug hole - just as it will be torqued onto the vehicle. The result is perfect Dynamic balancing results which also allows the balancer to determine the exact position of where the wheel weight has to be placed.
Since the Flange Plate only touch the wheel in the lug holes, there is no danger of scratching alloy wheels.

In addition, all alloy wheels that have a nut molded into the wheel design to hold the center cap, can now be balanced to perfection.

A standard back cone is used to pre-center the wheel on the balancer and the Flange Plate is positioned from the front of the wheel with the studs in each lug hole. Even though the cone is used to pre-center the wheel, the Flange Plate does most of the final centering.
